The first annual Maritime Scholastic Chess Team Championship was held at the Rotary Lodge in Dieppe on November 13. New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and P.E.I. each sent 24 of their best young players, divided into four groups by school grade. They all played four games against their counterparts from the other provinces.
At the end of the day, when the last king was checkmated, team New Brunswick emerged victorious, winning 63 games out of 96. Nova Scotia was second with 51 wins.
The highlight of the event for P.E.I. was placing first in the Kindergarten to Grade 3 section, scoring over 75%. Team members were Karla Lynn McCallum, Jeremy Norman, Isaac Hendrickson, Nathaniel Ing (all from Spring Park School), Ian Kerr (West Kent), and Noah Mannholland (Sherwood).
Individual champions for each grade group were Ian Kerr (PEI, K-3), Lucas Dorrance (NS, 4-6), Bob Feng (NB, 7-9), and Jason Manley (NB, 10-12).
Chess activity on the island is on the rise.
